Choosing an Online Course for Anxiety or Depression in the UAE: What to Look For
Updated: 1 day ago
A good online course for anxiety or depression tells you who designed it, names a method with evidence behind it, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), gives you a standard way to measure your symptoms, and says plainly when a course is not enough and therapy is the better step. In one randomised trial in adults with anxiety disorders, an eight-week MBSR course was found to be no worse than the medication escitalopram on the main measure (Hoge et al., 2023). Sarah El Nabulsi's two courses are built on CBT by a DHA-licensed clinical psychologist in Dubai, and they say clearly what they are and are not for.
What to look for in an online course
A named method with evidence behind it. CBT and mindfulness-based programmes have been tested in trials; in one, an eight-week MBSR course was noninferior to escitalopram for adults with anxiety disorders (Hoge et al., 2023). Transcendental Meditation has been studied too: a meta-analysis of randomised trials found reductions in trait anxiety, largest in people whose anxiety was highest to begin with (Orme-Johnson & Barnes, 2014), and a trial in health care workers found greater improvement in anxiety, emotional exhaustion and insomnia, though not on its main measure of distress (Joshi et al., 2022).
A way to measure your symptoms. Look for a standard questionnaire, such as the GAD-7 for anxiety (Spitzer et al., 2006) or the PHQ-9 for depression (Kroenke et al., 2001), so you can see how your scores change. Anxiety 101 uses the Beck Anxiety Inventory, a standard anxiety questionnaire used in CBT.
Clear scope & escalation. Programs should state when to step up to therapy (e.g., safety concerns, severe impairment) and how to book a clinician.

How to start (UAE buyer’s checklist)
Rate your symptoms before you start, with a standard questionnaire, and keep your score (Spitzer et al., 2006; Kroenke et al., 2001).
Choose your track:
CBT-based course (foundation; day-to-day tools). Sarahelnabulsi
Mindfulness-based program (time-boxed, class-style)—evidence includes noninferiority vs escitalopram for anxiety (Hoge et al., 2023).
TM as an adjunct (standardized instruction; RCTs/meta-analyses show anxiety reduction in specific populations). Joshi et al., 2022; Orme-Johnson & Barnes, 2014
Check privacy (PDPL-aligned notice) and refund terms. UAE Government Gateway
Set a pace you can keep, for example under 30 minutes a day; Anxiety 101 is about 4 to 5 hours in total. Retake the same questionnaire when you finish and compare (Spitzer et al., 2006; Kroenke et al., 2001).
Move to one-to-one therapy if your scores stay high or you are not coping. For UAE residents, Sarah El Nabulsi sees clients at Dr Reuter Medical Center, Jumeirah.
FAQs
How do I choose an online course for anxiety in the Gulf?
Look for a course built on CBT or a standardised mindfulness programme, with a way to measure your symptoms. Anxiety 101 is a self-paced, CBT-based course built for professionals in the Gulf. It is education, not therapy, and you can add therapy alongside it if you need to.
How do I start an online course for anxiety or depression in the UAE safely?
Measure your symptoms first with a standard questionnaire such as the GAD-7 or the PHQ-9 (Spitzer et al., 2006; Kroenke et al., 2001). Choose a course that says clearly what it is and is not for, and that publishes a privacy notice. If your scores are high, or you are unsure, book a consultation before you start. Sarah El Nabulsi's site explains both course enrolment and therapy booking.
Can meditation replace therapy or medication?
No. Evidence supports mindfulness/TM as helpful for many, but guideline-based therapy and/or medication may be indicated depending on diagnosis and severity. Use meditation as an adjunct within a clinician-guided plan (Hoge et al., 2023).
